Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica is a symptom of some other disorder which is causing inflammation to your sciatic nerve. Typically Sciatica is caused by a herniated disk, thinning of the disc space (Degenerative Disc Disease) or narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis).
Sciatica is characterized by one or a combination of the following symptoms:
Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg (rarely can occur in both legs)
Pain that is worse when sitting
Leg pain which is often described as burning, tingling or searing
Weakness, numbness and/or difficulty moving the leg or foot
A sharp pain that may make it difficult to stand up and/or to walk
