What is Dry Needling

Dry Needling involves multiple advances of a filament needle into the muscle in the region of a trigger point. The aim of Dry Needling is to achieve a local twitch response to release muscle tension and pain.

Myofascial trigger points are hyperirritable spots in the muscle associated with hypersensitive palpable nodules in a taught band.

Benefits of Dry Needling

Dry Needling benefits are listed below and include local, segmental and central effects.

  • Releases shortened muscles
  • Desensitize hypersensitive musculoskeletal structures while restoring motion and function
  • Removes irritation of spinal nerve roots by relieving short paraspinal muscles
  • Promotes healing through local increased blood flow to include platelet derived growth factor
  • Decreases biochemicals in myofascial trigger points
  • Decreases pain associated with myofasical trigger points

Dry needling can treat a variety of pain, both acute and chronic. It’s used as part of a larger treatment plan to effectively manage conditions like shoulder pain, back pain, neck pain, headaches, plantar fasciitis, tennis/golf elbow, sciatica and more.

In a study done in 2017, cortisone injections and Dry Needling were compared in the treatment of hip pain. The study found that cortisone did not provide greater pain relief or reduction in functional limitations than Dry Needling. It suggests that Dry Needing is a great treatment alternative to cortisone injections in the treatment of hip pain.

In another study done in 2018, Dry Needling was compared to steroid injections in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. The study found that although steroid injection can reduce plantar heel pain rapidly, Dry Needling provided more satisfactory results for patients with plantar fasciitis in the long term.
